Single elimination for pickleball: seeding, byes and how many rounds
How a single-elimination bracket works, how seeds and byes are placed, and how many rounds and matches you need. Then make one for free and print it.
How does single elimination work in pickleball?
Single elimination means one loss and a team is out. For n teams you play n minus 1 matches, over as many rounds as it takes to halve the field down to one, rounding up. When n is not a power of two, the top seeds get byes in round one.
| Teams | Rounds | Matches |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | 2 | 3 |
| 8 | 3 | 7 |
| 16 | 4 | 15 |
| 32 | 5 | 31 |
| 64 | 6 | 63 |
In a single-elimination bracket, teams are paired off, the winner of each match moves on and the loser is out. Each match removes exactly one team, so the event ends when one team has not lost. That team is the champion, and every other team loses exactly once. In doubles a team is the pair, so a bracket of 12 teams has 24 players. In singles an entry is one player.
Everything here about seeds and byes describes how the free bracket generator works. It is a convention, not a rule. USA Pickleball's rules summary (read 2 November 2026) says nothing about brackets, seeding or byes. It does say games are normally played to 11 points, win by 2, and that tournament games may be to 15 or 21, win by 2. The full rulebook was not checked.

What a bracket looks like
With 8 teams, round one pairs seeds 1 v 8, 4 v 5, 2 v 7 and 3 v 6, and the winners meet in the semi-finals and then the final. Seeds 1 and 2 sit on opposite halves, so they can meet only in the final. 8 teams play 7 matches over 3 rounds.
How many rounds and matches
Every match knocks out one team, and the champion is the only team that is never knocked out. So a bracket for n teams always plays n minus 1 matches: 12 for 13 teams, 63 for 64. The number of rounds is the number of times the field has to halve to reach one team. Count the teams up to the next power of two (4, 8, 16, 32, 64): 5 to 8 teams take 3 rounds, and 9 to 16 teams take 4.
In a full bracket, half the field is out after round one: 8 of 16 teams. With byes fewer teams play in round one, but the count left afterwards is still half the bracket size. 13 teams in a 16-slot bracket play 5 matches in round one, 5 teams go out, and 8 remain.
How seeding works
A seed is a team's ranking going in: seed 1 is the strongest. The aim of seeding is to keep the strongest teams apart until late. The top seed is paired with the lowest, and seeds 1 and 2 are placed on opposite halves, so they can meet only in the final. In a bracket of 8 or more slots, seeds 1 to 4 start in four different quarters.
With 16 slots, round one pairs the seeds like this:
| Match | Seeds |
|---|---|
| 1 | 1 v 16 |
| 2 | 8 v 9 |
| 3 | 4 v 13 |
| 4 | 5 v 12 |
| 5 | 2 v 15 |
| 6 | 7 v 10 |
| 7 | 3 v 14 |
| 8 | 6 v 11 |
This is the pattern the free generator and the PickleCrew app both use to place seeds. Where the seeds come from is up to you: a ranking, a ratings list, results from an earlier round robin, or a random draw. The generator seeds in the order you type, and has a shuffle for a random draw. It does not rate players or seed by skill.
How byes work
When the number of teams is not a power of two, the bracket still has the next power of two's worth of slots, and the empty slots are byes. A team with a bye skips round one and starts in round two. It does not play, and no score is recorded. The top seeds get the byes, so the strongest teams are spared round one and the lower seeds play it. The number of byes is the bracket size minus the number of teams.
A bye is not a match, so it does not add to the n minus 1. 13 teams have 3 byes and 12 matches, not 15.
| Teams | Slots | Byes | Round one |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 8 | 3 | 1 |
| 6 | 8 | 2 | 2 |
| 7 | 8 | 1 | 3 |
| 8 | 8 | 0 | 4 |
| 9 | 16 | 7 | 1 |
| 10 | 16 | 6 | 2 |
| 11 | 16 | 5 | 3 |
| 12 | 16 | 4 | 4 |
| 13 | 16 | 3 | 5 |
| 14 | 16 | 2 | 6 |
| 15 | 16 | 1 | 7 |
| 16 | 16 | 0 | 8 |
A shuffled bracket is a random draw, and the generator then reads the shuffled order as the seeds. The byes go to whoever is drawn first. If you want a bye to be an advantage for the strongest teams, seed them yourself and do not shuffle.
Third place, consolation and double elimination
These are add-ons. None is part of single elimination, and the free generator tracks none of them.
- Third-place match. The two teams that lose the semi-finals play for third. It is a house rule. The printed sheet has an optional third-place line, labelled as a house rule.
- Consolation bracket. Teams that lose their first match play on in a second bracket, so everyone gets more than one match. It is a house rule, and the generator does not build it.
- Double elimination. A team is out after its second loss. It takes more matches and a bigger bracket. The generator does not run it.
How to run a single-elimination bracket
- Count the entries. A doubles team is one entry. The free generator takes 2 to 64.
- Put them in seed order. Strongest first, or shuffle for a random draw.
- Check the byes. Find your number in the table above. Byes are not matches, so plan court time for the matches only.
- Agree the match length. Single elimination has no built-in score. You could play one game to 11, or best of three. Fix it before round one.
- Play round one, then each round in turn. Tap the winner in the free generator, or fill in a printed sheet. Winners move to the next round.
- Decide the add-ons before you start. Third place and a consolation bracket are optional, so agree them first.
Open the free bracket generator to seed, play and print a bracket for 2 to 64 entries. It needs no account.
Running it in the PickleCrew app
The free generator keeps one bracket in your browser. It has no courts, scheduling or rosters, and nothing from it travels to the app. PickleCrew's app can run a seeded single-elimination tournament for a crew you admin. You enter the players again and set each player's seed number yourself, from 1 up to the number of players, before you generate the bracket. The order you used in the free generator does not carry over.
Common mistakes
- Seeding on the day, after you see who turns up strong. Settle the seeds before round one.
- Treating a bye as a match. It adds no match, no score and no court time.
- Leaving a bye to chance and calling it earned. After a random draw the byes go to whoever drew them.
- Correcting a result late. If an earlier result changes after later rounds were played, those later results may no longer stand. The free generator asks before it clears them.
Ready to make a bracket?
The free generator needs no account and keeps one bracket in your browser. PickleCrew's app can run a seeded single-elimination tournament for a crew you admin, but you enter the players and set each seed yourself, and nothing from the free generator carries over.
Frequently asked questions
How does single elimination work?
Teams are paired off, the winner of each match moves on and the loser is out, until one team is left. Every team except the champion loses exactly once. For n teams there are n minus 1 matches.
How many games are in a single elimination tournament?
One fewer than the number of teams, because every match knocks out one team. A bracket for 8 teams has 7 matches, for 13 teams 12, and for 64 teams 63. A bye is not a match.
How many rounds are in a single elimination tournament?
As many as it takes to halve the field to one team, counting the teams up to the next power of two. Teams 5 to 8 take 3 rounds, 9 to 16 take 4, and 17 to 32 take 5.
What is a bye in a tournament bracket?
A bye is an empty first-round slot. The team that would have played it skips round one and starts in round two without playing a match. In a seeded bracket the byes go to the top seeds. 13 teams have 3 byes.
How do you seed a single elimination bracket?
Rank the teams, strongest first, and pair the top seed with the lowest, the second seed with the second lowest, and so on, placed so that seeds 1 and 2 can meet only in the final. With 16 teams the first round is 1 v 16, 8 v 9, 4 v 13, 5 v 12, 2 v 15, 7 v 10, 3 v 14 and 6 v 11. The free generator does this in the order you type the teams.
What is the difference between single and double elimination?
In single elimination one loss ends your event. In double elimination a team is out after its second loss, so it takes more matches. The free generator runs single elimination only.
