Gauntlet pickleball: PickleCrew's 8-player gauntlet night

Eight players, seven rounds, every partner once, then a playoff where seeds pick their partners. How it runs, and how it differs from the other gauntlet.

What is a gauntlet night in pickleball?

The Gauntlet is PickleCrew's night for exactly 8 players. Over 7 rounds everyone partners every other player once, in two games a round. The top 6 on the standings then play a pick-'em playoff: one semifinal, then a final. It is a different format from the seeded Gauntlet that Pickleheads runs.

Two formats called gauntlet

Pickleheads, a pickleball organizing app, has a format it calls Gauntlet. Its round robin guide (read 2 November 2026) says players are seeded by skill and that "winners draw more challenging opponents" as results come in, and presents it as a format of its own. PickleCrew's The Gauntlet is a different format with the same word. This page is about PickleCrew's.

We know of no source that makes either one a standard. Neither is a USA Pickleball rule. If your group already says gauntlet, ask which one they mean.

Use Pickleheads' format if you want results to steer the matchups and your headcount changes. Use The Gauntlet if you have exactly 8 and want everyone to partner each other once and then finish with a playoff.

How the seven rounds work

When the director generates a Gauntlet, the app assigns the 8 players to seats 1 to 8 at random. A fixed chart then says which seats partner and play in each round. Round 1 is created at that moment, and each later round is created when every game of the round before it is finished.

Each round has two games, so all 8 players play every round and nobody sits out. Over the 7 rounds each seat partners every other seat exactly once, which is 28 partnerships.

Scoring and standings

A game is played to 11 or to 15, which the director sets. The app's default is to 11, win by 2. With win by 2 on, a game that goes past the target ends at a two point lead, and a tie is not accepted. The director can also pick a duration of 60, 90 or 120 minutes, which the app describes as advisory: it does not end the event.

For comparison, USA Pickleball's rulebook says standard games are typically played to 11 and won by a 2 point lead.

Standings are individual. A win counts for both partners. Players are ranked by wins, then point difference, then points scored.

Players still level after that are separated by the director's tiebreaker setting. Coin flip is the default: a draw that is fixed for the event, so the same players tie the same way every time it is calculated. Seat order puts the lower seat number first. Organizer's choice flags the tied players for the organizer instead of drawing.

The playoff

The top 6 players in the final standings advance. Seeds 7 and 8 are out. Seeds 1 and 2 wait while seeds 3 to 6 play one semifinal game, then the semifinal winners join them for the final.

A director can make either pick on the player's behalf. A guest has no account, so a guest's pick can only be made by a director.

Running it in the app

Start one in PickleCrew from the Compete tab of a crew you admin. What a group needs:

  1. A crew, and you as its admin. Competitions live in crews. People who are not admins can see the formats but cannot start one.
  2. Exactly 8 players on the roster. Members or guests. The app refuses to generate a Gauntlet with any other count.
  3. The Gauntlet in Compete. Choose it from the format cards, or from Start a competition, then set the game target, win by 2, the final's rule, the tiebreaker and the duration.
  4. Generate, then score. The app seats the 8 players, creates round 1 and moves on as each round's games are scored.

Common mistakes

  • Starting with the wrong number. The Gauntlet needs exactly 8. For other sizes, plan a round robin or run a mixer.
  • Expecting results to steer the matchups. In The Gauntlet the seven rounds are fixed. Results decide the seeds, not the pairings.
  • Mixing up who picks. Seed 3 picks for the semifinal and seed 1 picks for the final.
  • Telling the group it is the Pickleheads format. Say which gauntlet it is.

More formats

For a bigger group or a different count, the round robin generator plans 4 to 24 players. To compare every format, see the formats page. For a knockout finale of your own, see single elimination.

Frequently asked questions

What is gauntlet in pickleball?

The word names more than one format. Pickleheads uses it for a seeded round robin where winners face tougher opponents. PickleCrew's The Gauntlet is a separate 8-player night: seven rounds with every partner once, then a pick-'em playoff for the top 6.

What is the gauntlet pickleball format?

In PickleCrew, 8 players play 7 rounds of two games, partnering every other player exactly once. The standings rank everyone, the top 6 advance, seed 3 picks a partner for one semifinal game, and seed 1 picks for the final.

What does gauntlet mean in pickleball?

It depends on who you ask. Pickleheads describes its Gauntlet as a seeded format in which matchups follow results. PickleCrew's The Gauntlet uses a fixed seven-round chart and then a playoff. Ask which one your group means before you start.
